1. Always leave the door of the washing machine open for an hour or two after you have removed the laundry.

This allows the washing machine to dry out and air to circulate which avoids mildew forming in the rubber around the washer door's seal. This mildew can be a cause of bad smelling laundry.

2. Leave the detergent drawer open after each wash. This will avoid mildew forming in the drawer.

This mildew could then be dragged down into future washes by the stream of water that rushes through it. It will not only make your laundry smell badly but it also contains bacteria that will be spread around the items.

3. Always use good quality detergent and use the minimum amount recommended.

Using large quantities of detergent doesn't mean the laundry will be cleaner; in fact it is just makes it more difficult to rinse it out of the laundry. It could eventually clog up the washing machine which could cause your clothes to smell badly.

4. Remove the laundry as soon as possible after the cycle is complete.

Leaving laundry in the machine can cause it to smell moldy and is certainly more likely to cause mildew to grow inside the machine and especially the rubber that is used as for the washing machine's door seal.

5. Dry the laundry as soon as it is removed either by hanging it out so air can circulate around each item or by using a dryer.

Damp laundry in a pile can smell pretty bad once it is dry.

6. Make certain that thicker items are dry before you put them away.

Putting away a damp item can turn into a smelly item just when you are ready to wear it.

8. Once a month use white vinegar to freshen your washing machine and remove any mildew.

Pour around 500ml of white vinegar into the laundry detergent drawer and you can also add up to a cup of baking soda directly into the drum. Run on the hottest cycle and then follow with another rinse.

10. Use Tea Tree Oil when you have forgotten to remove your laundry from the machine and it doesn't smell too good.

Put 3 drops of Tea Tree Oil in with the detergent and run the laundry through a quick cycle. You will find that your laundry will smell fresh again. The Tea Tree oil kills bad odours. You can even use this tip to wash running shoes and sports clothes.
